HEALTH EDUCATION AND COUNSELING

Feria De Salud Para Los Ancianos - Senior Health & Information Fair - The 5 th Annual Latino Senior Health and Information Fair held on October 9, 2004 was a tremendous success with over 300 individuals and families in attendance. Over 100 volunteers provided health screening services, flu shots, information, and resources during the event at our Centro San Juan Diego site. Entertainment included traditional Mexican Folkloric and Aztec dancing and music. Twenty-eight exhibitors also provided prevention oriented health information and resources. Co-hosts and sponsors included:

Comienzos Brillantes - Bright Beginnings - The project prepares parents to support the physical and intellectual development of their children during the prenatal stages up to age 3 through classroom instruction, individual support services, and information and referrals.

Viviendo En Harmonia - Living In Harmony: Family And Individual Counseling - This program offers support group services, family and individual counseling. Support group dialogue includes conflict-resolution, parenting, and family communication skills.

La Vida Continua - Support Group For Spanish-Speaking Widows - This collaborative partnership with the AARP offers a support group, educational sessions, resources, and referrals for Spanish-speaking widows.

Comadres Sobre Mesa - Domestic Violence Support Group - This partnership with Safehouse Denver provides education, outreach, and support sessions for Spanish-speaking women with an empowerment-focused curriculum titled, “Journey from Abuse to Health and Wholeness.” Domestic violence outreach, counseling, and individual supports, including referrals and linkages to resources within the community are also offered.

La Salud En Casa – Home Health Care Education - Monolingual, Spanish speaking program participants receive a self-care handbook and educational sessions that teach and promote basic home health care and nutrition. The curriculum includes information and supports for recognizing and coping with common health problems, especially those that are most prevalent among Latinos. The curriculum also includes prevention oriented information and materials, home treatment and tips on patient rights and when to call a medical professional.

Asistencia Para Families Immigrantes - Immigrant Family Assistance - This program provides case management, advocacy, referral service, and outreach with basic survival needs including housing, food, childcare, immigration, and employment for newly arrived immigrant families.
