Our Courts and Bienestar Servicios Familiares of Centro San Juan Diego of the Archdiocese of Denver showcase Spanish-language public education programs about the courts DENVER—Our Courts, a nationally recognized speakers bureau that provides nonpartisan educational information about the Colorado state and federal court systems, has teamed up with Bienestar Servicios Familiares of Centro San Juan Diego to promote its Spanish-language programs within the Latino community of metro Denver and northern Colorado.
Bienestar Servicios Familiares, the Family Support Services ministry of Centro San Juan Diego, will host a special event to showcase the first-ever Spanish-language programs about how courts conduct criminal and civil cases from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 10, at Centro San Juan Diego, 2830 Lawrence St. Expected attendees include appellate and trial court judges, leaders of the Colorado legal community, and Hispanic community leaders.
“After great success with its English-language presentations, Our Courts has embarked on a major effort to reach Spanish-speaking audiences,” said Our Courts executive committee chair and U.S. District Judge Marcia Krieger. “Our initial Spanish-language presentations have been very well received, and we are grateful to Centro San Juan Diego for providing this opportunity to reach leaders of numerous Hispanic organizations.”
The Friday event will feature abbreviated Spanish-language versions of two programs – “Law and Order: The Life of a Criminal Case” and “See You in Court: The Life of a Civil Lawsuit.” The presentations, complete with PowerPoint slides in Spanish and English, discuss both types of proceedings, the rights of the parties, and the roles played by witnesses, jurors, lawyers, and judges. A reception will follow.
“Because of our emphasis on the importance of adult education for Hispanics in the Archdiocese, we are delighted to provide this forum for Our Courts (Nuestras Cortes) to introduce its programs about the workings of Colorado courts to Hispanic community leaders,” said Bienestar Servicios Familiares program director Sister Alicia Cuaron.
Since 2007, the volunteer judges and lawyers participating in Our Court have made 285 presentations to over 9,250people.
